Production Methods

Hello,

I am trying to bring in a large, multi-scan point cloud (70+ high-res scans) into Capturing Reality and to reduce file size I would like to unify the data. The problem is that unified data can not be exported as E57 or PTX, only PTS.

Do you know if there an effective work-around for this issue?

I have tried CloudCompare but the conversion seems to eliminate some of the point data.

Thanks!

By unify, do you mean merge all scans into one big one?

Yes, combining numerous scans into one file, reducing the overall size of the point cloud and processing time significantly.

The problem is that the registration software can’t export a unified E57 file as the converted data is unstructured.

I would rather not change the registration software, looking for some kind of effective workaround.

Ok, have you looked around in the forum or help yet? There are plenty of threads that can answer your question easily.

RC needs individual scans (ordered pointclouds). In very specific cases, unorded clouds CAN work as well, but not ordinarily. In my cases, the size is reduced by a factor of 6 in comparison to ptx files. I think e57 is usually smaller, so there might be less of a difference…

Why do you think you got to unify it? You dont have enought free space? RC will unify your laser scans by default, you can change it in parameter  Minimal distance between two points

You can’t use unified scans in RC.
