Hello everyone,
I’d like to showcase Procedural Material Layers, a flexible material system for creating detailed, customizable surfaces in Unreal Engine 5.
The system allows you to combine multiple material layers and control their distribution using vertex painting, mesh data, textures, and procedural masks. It is designed for environments, props, architecture, landscapes, and other assets that require detailed surface variation.
Main Features
-
Multiple procedural material layers
-
Vertex-color painting
-
Mesh and texture-based painting
-
Height-based material blending
-
Surface displacement
-
Silhouette Parallax Occlusion Mapping
-
Rain and wet-surface effects
-
Dynamic puddles
-
Dirt, damage, edge, and surface effects
-
Decal support
-
Customizable material-layer presets
-
PBR texture controls
-
Albedo, normal, roughness, and other material adjustments
-
Support for detailed Nanite meshes
-
Reusable workflow across different assets
The system provides a non-destructive workflow that makes it easier to create surface variation without producing a separate set of textures for every asset.
Materials can be adjusted directly through instances, allowing artists to create different results without modifying the master material or its material functions.
