The background image in the material editor is black, I would like to know how to change it to something else, either a solid color or an image?

In material editor go to Window=>Preview Scene Settings It will open new tab near details panel, there you can tweak preview scene to your needs as i remember

Here is a snap shot of what I see. I can find the windows menu, but I don’t see anything called “Preview Scene Settings”

Not sure when they added that feature But OP was on 4.17 and I am on 4.23 so it should be there from 23 and above ^^
