Poor Level Design

I have the ideas. I can prototype games but when it comes time to start crafting out level designs…not so much. Everything always comes out flat and boring. Anyone got tips for improving this?

One of the things you have to decide before creating your levels is the purpose. Many people just want to jump into the creation aspect of it, but you have to have a reason for the player to be there. Figure out what elements you want the player to interact with and how things are supposed to flow, then design around that. Level design is in many ways putting in visual format what you have written down. Once you decide the purpose, it should sort of fall into place. =)
