POLYSTRIKE From a Dota 2 Custom Game with 200,000 Players to a Standalone UE5 Tactical Shooter

Hey Unreal Engine community! :waving_hand:

We’re excited to finally introduce POLYSTRIKE, our competitive 5v5 top-down tactical shooter built in Unreal Engine 5.

POLYSTRIKE has a pretty unusual history.

The project originally started as a Dota 2 custom game in 2019, where it attracted 200,000+ players during its first week.

Years later, we decided to take the core idea much further and rebuild POLYSTRIKE from the ground up as a completely independent standalone game in Unreal Engine 5.

Building tactical gameplay from above

One of our biggest challenges has been translating the tension and decision-making of competitive tactical shooters into a top-down perspective.

We’ve been developing systems around:

  • 5v5 round-based combat
  • Bomb plant / defuse objectives
  • Weapon economy and loadouts
  • Recoil and accuracy
  • Smoke, flash and incendiary utility
  • Personal Fog of War / visibility
  • Directional and surface-based audio
  • Competitive map design built specifically for a top-down camera

A LIVING OBJECTIVE

EVERY MAP IS A NEW OPERATION

DIFFERENT SURFACES

NO PREDEFINED ROLES

We officially revealed the standalone game in August 2026, and around 7,000 players wishlisted POLYSTRIKE during its first week.

There is still a lot we’re building and improving, but after such a long journey, it feels great to finally show the project publicly.
