Blender soon might not have FBX exporter. Blender devs are thinking about effectively stopping any further development due to the format being proprietary and Autodesk breaking it with every new version.
There are a few open model and animation formats in the wild that could potentially work as replacement for FBX.
Is it possible to write a plugin for UE4 to import skinned and animated models in either OpenGEX or IQM formats?
I have been looking at writing an import plugin for glTF or OpenGEX, or potentially both depending on time, will post in WIP when I have something more to show.
I am not really sure glTF is the nest candidate, because it’s mostly should be used as run-time format and to my understanding UE4 already has internal run-time format for static/animated models. Plus OpenGEX has Blender/MAX/Maya exporters already.
Although I might be wrong - I am not a software engineer
