Hi,

“Got Skills” Thread is not working and full of ****. It is a real chor to sort amongst the kids with their “[Uber Paid] I am have best game idea and I will get money on kickstarter! :: Looking for C++ Programmer and 3D Artists”.

I’ve almost begun to see the “Got Skills” thread as kind of a false flag, to ward of the junk and that the real stuff is in the work in progress section.

The reason I think this is really important now more than ever, is because in previous versions of the unreal engine it was mostly just about finding the right people and plugging them into the engine, with the editor itself not really being a place of creativity outside of level designers. Now with blueprints UE4 and the market place, the UE4 editor can acutally be a primary place of creativity instead of just a hub where things are plugged in.

What would be really nice is if there was some sort of much more congruent and easy way to sort through projects, a kind of project directory where people can list their project, whether it needs people or not. The forum itself could contain a kind of spot light banner and could highlight important projects.

Conceptart.org was really successful, it merely had a thread labeled “Sketchbooks” and people post pictures from their sketchbooks in their and received comments and criticism from the community, it really changed the whole way concept art works, so many people got so much better.

When I’m working on various things I may or may not finish, I’d sometimes like to share those things with the community but feel afraid of putting them in the WIP section, a kind of sketchbook setup would make me feel more comfortable on sharing my experience with the engine as a whole instead of trying to section off my experiences into little pieces and threads.

The Unreal Engine community is pretty small, it only takes a few weeks to get familiar with who’s who and all the names, I really think an upgrade to the forum and the tools the community has would go a long way, after all Epic is already doing so much with their twitch broadcasts.

I’m sure I will have more to say about this latter, I’m not trying to suggest that this forum compete with polycount or cgtalk or something like that.

I don’t think project recruiting paid or unpaid should be in the forums at all. Project showcasing is more than fine, but recruitment should be separate from the forum. The reason is as you state: you have to run through a bunch of nonsense to see if there is anything you are interested in and on top of that a thread style for recruiting just looks tacky. In terms of project showcasing that belongs on the forum because the thread style of a forum itself is what you want for feedback purposes.

There are off the shelf (some open source) job board scripts available. Maybe Epic could integrate one of them.

A simple system where an individual or team can post their project and list contact details would be great. Maybe a rating system could also be added so that scam/spam postings could be filtered out.

Not quite agree.
Of course this threads are useless for you, but I think it is better for kids and newbies to form gamedev groups rather than learn and make stuff by themselves only. And this place is perfect for this purpose because you can’t find anywhere in the world more UE4 newbies willing to do something than there:p

right now its not just the newbies, its that there are people looking for work, outsourcing studios looking to sell their services and a few other things that make it quite confusing to see who is who and what is going on. It would be nice to filter these.

I dont know if anybody here is old enough to remember the days of unreal and ut99 what it was like to go to a site like , I remember howevery single day I would visit that site, looking for new maps weapons and mods. It was a real buzz.

The twitch broadcast actually does mention a lot the great stuff already, I just think a little bit more forum integration would be nice.

Sub forums in the recruitment section would be nice - a spot for people looking to do work, and a for split unpaid / royalty stuff and paid work.

I believe it is fine the way it is, people just add tags like PAID UNPAID ROYALTY LFW to mean what they are looking for… Unity splitted the looking for work as some people are suggesting and while it gave obvious advantages to people selling their skills it practically killed hobbyist/beginner cooperation initiatives…
