Please help with hardware for large / complex TM files

Hello All,

I really need some help and advice with hardware for my TM files please.

Until last weekend I was running TM on a M1 MacBook Air, 8GB RAM. My latest TM model (and the type of model I'll be running going forward) just won't run well on this machine, as it's too complex.

My current file has 1 million polygons (lots of high quality plant models from Maxtree) and 4GB textures. Even on low quality, the Mac understandably really struggles and is borderline unusable. It won't even attempt to output 4k video.

So I bought a Windows laptop, based on the high end spec requirements on the TM website. This laptop's specs are:

i7 14 core 12700H (4.7GHz Turbo)

64 GB Corsair 3200MHz DDR4

RTX 3080Ti (Laptop) 16GB VRAM

And it's struggling. Not much difference from my Mac Air. Which seems crazy! It's borderline unusable in high quality settings (FPS 2-10) and not much better in medium quality (FPS 10-15). And it crashes quite a lot. I've checked that TM is using the RTX 3080i etc. It will output 4K video, but I need more than that clearly.

And it's worth saying that I'm using TM 2022 rather than 2023 (2023 kept crashing).

So the laptop is going back. But now I don't know what I need. Do I need a desktop for the type of TM files that I want to run? What kind of spec do I need?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks very much!

HI ,

I see you already reviewed the Twinmotion System Requirements article, which is what we base our recommendations off of.

At this time, we don't recommend using M1 Macs, since we don't officially support Apple Silicon hardware yet.

For your Windows laptop, the specs you posted are well above minimum, so the laptop should handle most scenes fairly well. One thing to take note of with laptops is that their GPUs do not perform as well as the desktop equivalents, and it is possible that the laptop you had may have reduced GPU performance to conserve power or reduce heat. You may have better luck with other laptops, but an equivalent desktop should also avoid performance issues.

I hope that helps.

TM 2023 runs a lot slower for me but UE 5.1 runs just fine. I use a laptop also.

Hi ,

We are looking into some performance degradation issues between Twinmotion 2022.2.3 and 2023.1 Preview 1. These should be addressed in the next update.

Best,
