PLEASE HELP - HARD CRASH ON STARTUP

So everything was fine, i was sculpting my landscape, no problems. saved, exited. the next day, tried to open it back up, and BOOM. Crash. everytime i try to load it up again, crash. for context, its a huge world and runs at around 30 fps, did i hit the limit on how far i can push the engine?? here is what the crash says

what does it mean? did i add too much geometry

No worries! So you can actually use ``` code goes here ``` to display larger text stacks on the forums, alternatively you can actually upload the text file itself. . Your general logs are in Saved/Logs and crash logs are under Saved/Crashes in your project folder.

Are you using landscape brushes? Or the water plugin (that also uses landscape brushes) with the nanite?

Does it do this for any/all projects? it looks to me to be the engine having a problem more than something with the landscape, but I’m also not the best at reading the error logs and knowing exactly what they mean yet, i would try

Backup your projects and reinstall the engine,

Remember to take note of which plugins your using if any and the engine version before reinstalling

it may also be missing a trailer/loading screen or something if you ever set that up but usually it calls those movies so not likely that

nahhh it just does it with the 1 project, i went into the projects ini file and changed the startup map and that opens up no problem, but just my main map with all my progress won’t open, tbh its a lot for my pc, i added megascan trees all over the world on top of the 4 landscapes, only 1 is nanite enabled though, it usually crashes when i try to convert the larger landscapes, it was really chugging, especially after sculpting my 4th landscape with more detail. it’d freeze up and everytime i started working on the 4th, it would have this loading thing at the bottom right corner of the screen talking about landscape 2’s name and it changing or something!

Umm i have the water plugin enabled i think, i was testing water a while ago, thats a pretty good observation. also brushes? nothing external, just what UE5 comes with, like raise and lower terrain and stuff

i just updated from 5.4.1 to 5.4.2 today, its still crashing but i’ll try to do a full reinstall today, just takes a bit of time. Also for more context, the map that crashes is around 80GB large by itself, i don’t know if its bloat somewhere that is stressing the engine but it crashes at 96% on startup, i remember the land thing it was saying was something about verifying somethingthen crash, not sure’ i’d have to switch the startup map once again

It should just about always load it, it will compress the crap outta stuff if your running low on resources, windows will even resort to using some amount of hard drive space as ram if your pushing it over your cpu cache and ram/vRam capabilites so it should always be a choppy mess rather than never opening

Sorry i don’t know more than that but a 3080 and 32gb of ram should be fairly solid for game development frankly, i have a 3060 Desktop card and it does great, you don’t want your players to need this tho so you’ll want to optimize it somehow before you dip too far below 30, itll also make your workflow feel nicer

This and all the engine complaints about not being able to make its different windows is what makes me think try reinstalling the engine btw

all the stuff in the 4th post just is mostly nonsense to me at this time : )

Also hopefully goes without saying the 5.4.anything are kinda new and not stable yet

Judging by the size of the map both actual size and storage size, you might be hitting the upper limits of landscape implementation. I haven’t been able to find similar issues involving the trailer payload system. If possible, could you back up your project then delete the landscape portion causing the error (6 specifically) and check to see if the crash persists.

2 questions, how do i delete the landscape if i can’t open the map and second is do you think the landscape limits would increase on a faster rig?? maybe its too many shaders or something for my gpu

okay, i was able to open it in C++ , i’m going to backup the project before i mess with anything HAHAHAH never tried this before, i like blueprints better but it will probably help a lot!

Since it’s a serialization error I don’t know if GPU drivers will correct it, but it shouldn’t hurt. First let’s try and get you into the project in general. Head into ProjectFolder/Config/DefaultEngine.ini and you can change the starting map to a different map altogether to at least get you back into the project and get a foothold.

Edit: Are you referencing the scripts or were able to open the map itself successfully?
