this is my first time importing multiple child having models into unreal, how would i go about importing a model that needs to be able to be animated, i set it up where everything is attached in the maya hierarchy, but do i need to add a rig and if i do does anyone have any good resources for me to follow

The best approach is always going to be having your own rig from the start, which can then be manipulated in UE, using the control rig feature. I would start with the basic pipeline in Maya, joints > skinning > basic IK/FK rig.
