Physical art installation with a political message done with UE4

At Logic Interactive in Oslo, we were part of building and developing a physical art installation for an organization called “The Climate Roar” :

The political message is to apply pressure to the politicians and make them care more about the climate crisis. So to do this the client wanted to build a “roar machine” ,
that should be unveiled infront of the parlament and then should travel for 4 years playing a
continuous roar for the climate.

People upload videos of them roaring for the enviroment and they are synced into the installation
and played seamlessly around the clock - eveyone can be a part of the movement.

The physical installation is built with an organic look using wood on the outside and a futuristic look with aluminium and LEDs on the inside.
It features a powerful sound design done by the great Norwegian Electronica artist Röyksopp and Simon M. Valentine

People should approach the installation, step into it and - on que, “roar” as high as they can. (For the climate, that is).
Then; based on how hard they try - the installation will roar back to them using an audiovisual response with sound and lights.

Behind this there is a bunch of custom sensors and audio analyzing done in UE4 - tracking peoples motion and listening to how much noise
and how high they “roar”, and mapping VFX in Unreal Engine to LEDs and light displayed back to the people standing there.

.

.

The UE4-to-physical setup pipeline is made up of a virtual camera rig
and an 1-1 mached model of the physical installation.

Based on custom sensor data and audio analyzing events are triggered
and driven by the peoples movement and noise - this drives several
custom Niagara particle systems that are part of sequencer animations.
The angled captures are mapped to LEDs using an Open Pixel control
custom plugin we developed. - (Showing parts of the setup in UE4)
