Hello guys.
Well, I’m a little dumb about hardware so I need some advice from you guys that understand easy better than me.
My question is. I need to improve my computer, because now I’m working with architecture in UE4 for VR.
My actual computer is;
And every time that I’ll build lighting or something it takes about 3-5hours, i often build about 7-121k lights objects.
I know that when y’all look to my 6GB Ram you guys found the problem, but when I look to how much memory it is using, it’s never more than 2.5GB, I use the UE4 Show Memory Use to monitoring.
And everyone I see uses about 32-64Gb RAM
I need this help from you guys.
Should I improve my memory to 30GB+ I have 2x TRI-Channek slot (6 slots) to DDR3 RAM
Should I upgrade my GPU? I have two slots to GPU.
Should I upgrade my Xeon? I think that he is in the same level os some i7.
My projects have about 97-110k meshes importing from SketchUp by Datasmith, normally it is a lot of houses and I need to do it in 4k textures. My fps without lighting is 90-120, with lighting it get about 40-60 in the middle of the constructions.
If you can hold off with the upgrade for a couple of months, do so. The new Ryzen line up looks pretty promising and Intel has yet to reveal their answer.
Btw, not sure how you’re holding up with just 6GB of Ram. The grace of the SSD I guess, but that’s still awfully slow compared to memory.
it’s never more than 2.5GB
Do note that windows manages memory as well. It may reserve some; the more you have, the more can be allocated to certain tasks without the need for a swap file usage - which is the biggest bottleneck on most systems.

Do not go this route, adding another dated 480 will give you nothing, there’s no crossfire / sli support.
There is a thread in the forums where folks directly compare platforms when building the engine (and lighting, I think) - it’s a good indication of what to expect from higher tier machines. Unfortunately, I can’t find it atm
Also, Xeon x5690 is a 6 core threaded CPU, it’s no slouch but does lag significantly behind the current gen heavy hitters. If I were you, I’d invest in RAM. Do note that min system requirements is 8GB - that’s barely enough for light work. What you’re doing is quite far from light. You should be able to get 3x8GB DDR3 for around £100 if you’re lucky. They’re hard to get in 3s but fairly cheap in 2x sets. Buy 2 sets of 2x8GB 1066 sticks, use 3, sell the 4th stick and sell your 6GB kit. Profit.
I do wonder how your SSD usage looks like during building. Somehow I feel you hit 100% and just stay there for the duration.
