In unity, one of the handy features they had was that you could play in the viewport. Then pause the game and go into the normal editor mode to make changes while playing. It was especially handy for debugging.

You can press the Eject button on the toolbar move around, move stuff around and then press Posses to resume. Is that what you meant ?
