I just double checked and you are right! I had misread. I assumed because they were for free with 3d objects, they’d also be free by themselves. Looking at their terms of service that isn’t the case. So sorry! Good thing I never got around to selling these! Well those items are not for sale anymore and I’ve fixed that post! Thank you for pointing out.

I get 30-40fps with over 600k instances with 4.7’s new foliage lighting model. No culling, no shadows, no mips.
After I do a little more optimization, namely enabling mip maps, and employing culling at around 20k, I get 80fps+ with 1.8m instances.

I’ve always thought of the CGTextures terms of service being slightly odd. Why? Well, because you can technically sell them, if you simply bundle them with a 3D asset or sample scene. Which means, you could essentially stick them onto a plane, package that up and sell them without.

A lot of it has to do with intent, which makes the usage tricky and is what actually got me all bundled up. I thought exactly the same thing you did. But if you’re more or less using the texture to directly compete with them in the area of work that they do, then they’ve put terms in there to stop that from happening. It’s pretty silly because in the indie market most people still need someone like us to make materials for them but their terms are theirs terms so not much we can do about it. We were going to make a texture pack originally and release it on the marketplace but we’re going to be concentrating on a map pack instead.
