in recent releases of UE4, the Oculus Rift support is a significant obstacle as long as you own a Rift headset but are not working on a VR game, as Oculus would launch every single time you playtest the game, the app would annyoingly stay open on the taskbar, and the headsed would be turned on and heating up when it’s not used.
First workaround was to disable all VR plugins, and restart the project. Unfortunately, this would always result into a crash of compiled game executable on launch. An issue Epic keeps ignoring for some reason.
Luckily, someone on Oculus forum suggested a great workaround. If you set Oculus app executable to be ran as Administrator in Windows, the Oculus app would not launch at all, and the plugins could stay active, so I would not get any crashes of compiled game.
This worked well, up until now. Oculus has released a recent update to their App, and now, as long as the executable is set to be ran as Administrator, every single click of play button results in a long lag and runs the Windows notification sound that a new device has been plugged in, and stopping the game results into another long lag and Windows notification sound that a device has been unplugged.
It will soon be two years since Oculus CV1 was released. It would be more than appropriate to finally sort this out.
It’s not clear what you are complaining about. I have Rift and Rift software is obviously installed. Rift software is a layer that lets you use VR. I also have Steam VR installed (software, not UE4 plugin). When I have Rift disconnected and load up my VR project, Steam VR runs automatically first, then UE4 project loads up. If I have Rift connected, Rift software loads up first.
There is absolutely no reason to work on VR project and not being able to test it - you need Oculus software to be running in order to be able to run your VR project in VR, afaik.
That’s exactly my point. If you do NOT develop a VR game, then you don’t want Oculus software in your way. Owning a VR headset does not mean that every single game you will develop from that point on will be a VR game.
