So I originally thought that the unreal engine was the only program you might need to do basic level design. After using a lot of BSP my unreal engine started to lag a lot and I found out that using them to create maps is an outdated technique, and only good for testing gameflow with simple designs.
If this is true, how does the level design process work? Do I create maps in blender or maya and then important them in to the unreal engine to finish them off?
Sorry this is probably quite a simple question to most people, but im completely new to this, and was hoping to start designing my own levels.
Some level designers will use BSP to block out a level without actually doing any detail modeling. The vast majority of the time you’ll want to model everything in a 3D program like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max and then export to UE4.
You can design things so that you can have a set of meshes that you would export to UE4 and then you would use them to add the detail to the map, or you could design the level entirely in your 3D program.
Okay great! thanks for your advice. So if I made a series of props to import them in to UE4 would I then use bsp to create the majority of the level? Although im guessing that choice is up to me and depends on how I want my design process to work.
Also do you know of any decent blender tutorial sites? or youtube channels perhaps.
