Niagara - the most terrible and UX and usability

Is it just me or is Niagara just the most awful particle system ever saw?

I’ve worked a lot with particle systems like PFlow, Thinking Particles and also X-Particles, so in general I would say I am pretty familiar with the common events and functions and of how things interact.

Before I used Niagara I looked into Cascade and I was already confused by this stacking logic which, allows redundant functions but at the same time doesn’t allow deleting certain things. Cascade already had a lot of unclear parameters and the documentation does not explain how things actually interact. And it feels like this got 100x worse with Niagara. For sure there was a huge demand for advanced VFX but these weird stacking and unfolding menus are totally confusing and they almost impossible to read. Half the time I feel like I’m having no idea what I am doing or why I doing things, while following some basic tutorials.

The particle effects I am seeing on YouTube and the Tutorial Results are pretty impressive but I have absolutely no Idea how people got so far.
I showed Niagara my colleagues in the office (Cinema4D and Houdini Artists) and they told me to f*** off

Sorry for being so harsh, I really don’t mean do insult the developers and UX designers, but I just wanted to share this and I am curious about the other users experience.
If am totally wrong, I would be happy to hear your thoughts and if possible, pls share some links which truly explain how things work.

Thanks
Felix

I’m not a VFX artist just a developer, but I had some hopes of learning niagra and being able to make my own particles. After following some tutorials I abandoned any hope of that. Too much black magic set this variable here and change it to something with 10 different parameters. Then in the next system do the same but change just this one value and TADA a totally different behavior.

Anyway It comes across to me that the target market for it is advanced VFX folks, so your comments about your colleagues are telling. I might try learning houdini for effects and see if I have better luck with that.

Guess it just depends …

TBH I like Niagara quite a bit - extremely flexible.
