New {UE/AI focused} laptop, old issues: GPU crashes, sudden CTDs and system shutdowns. Can somebody help me?

Hello fellow devs!
I need help… my new laptop arrived and it’s already in trouble with GPU crashing, CTDs and system failures/shutdowns.

This is the rig:

Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI {mod. PHN16-73-92SX}

  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 12 GB GDDR7

  • Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX

  • 32 GB DDR5 {expandable up to 64 GB}

  • 16” WQXGA 240 Hz display

  • 1 TB SSD {I’ve created a 320GB system dedicated disk C: where I set up a 48k min / 96k max paging file, all the rest assigned to UE installation, projects and data as disk D:}

  • Fully functional Thunderbolt 4 port {I was considering an eGPU as next investment, to come together with additional 32 GB RAM, for later on}

  • Windows 11 Home

Originally it seemed all caused by the fact a feature of the laptop has prioritized the integrated gpu instead of the Invidia one.

I fixed that and added TDR delay to the register and doing that I could run the 3 main maps of City Sample in UE for a while in a previous session.
In my last session after that fix it did happen again going worse, the laptop got frozen and went shut down. What’s your opinion? Should I consider the issue somehow fixable or should I send the laptop back?
I know a desktop would have been the best option but I really needed a laptop for mobility reasons.
Thanks in advance, please don’t ignore my message. I know I sound desperate but maybe I really am, a laptop like that, with a 2800/2900€ value and those specs shouldn’t be a problem like that.

Opinions, suggestions, solutions… everything constructive is welcome.

Cheers.

i empathize. tbh i don’t trust laptops.

it would help if you share more details of your setup.

i can suggest:

  • make sure you have the studio and not game ready version of the drivers. if need to chnage make sure to use the uninstall tool in the nvidia web.
  • check the power profile
  • maybe try it with power plugged in just to see if it makes a difference
  • make sure the ventilation is good, and it’s not overheating.
  • if you have an nvidia card you can limit the power usage. try that and see if it works well.

32 gb ram is good, but a bit tight.

though… if the hardware is causing issues out of the box. i’d reconsider asking for a change. imho after many years of working in games and web. i haven’t found laptops to truly equate to mobile productivity. but maybe your case is different.

if you can get a hold of an external drive, i would install kubuntu, the drivers, and ue, and check if the same issue exists.

i don’t recommend having a dynamic size page file. it’s more performant to have a static size. i.e. max and min are equals.
