New To Animation

Hi, im very much new in unreal engine, what app should i use to animate for my games that beginner friendly??

None.

Animation is not a beginner thing.

Out of all the programs out there, all of them have various uses and obvious pitfalls. There isn’t one that is outright better than another.

Blender is free, the animation stuff on it works for the most part.

Maya isnt free, but the industry likes it better.

Houdini is somewhat free, but im not sure about animating characters with it.

Pixologic got bought out by a predatory company and is now selling subscriptions like Adobe, so you can never own it, which = forget about it even existing.

3ds max is also not free - and im not sure about the latest versions, but the old ones are a bit though to learn as far as animation goes.

Whichever you pic, the scenario is always the same.
You need to know what you are doing and what is what before you can even start to consider making actual animations.

Once you get the jist of it, its either really hard if you want realism, of a cakewalk if you just don’t care…

so if i want an animation, i make it from blender first and then export it to unreal engine right?? so that i can use that animation in my character bp. sorry still very beginner

Hey @Pandagraphh! Welcome to the forums!

If you using Blender you are correct. You will want to export it from Blender, then you will want to import those exported files into Unreal. To help get you started, check out these non-Epic affiliated guides on how to do that:

After that I recommend setting up an animation blueprint. Here is another non-Epic affiliated guide to show you the basics of doing so:

Let me know if this above works for you!

To do it properly, you’ll probably use an external program like the guys say, look up rigging and animation. You can also create a control rig in Unreal but that might be more complex tbh and as far as im aware its mostly for complex procedural animation tasks. Another option for super simple animations is to just adjust the transform (e.g. pivot point rotation) for parented objects in sequencer.

Thank you so much for the reply, its very helpful and now i know what i need to do. but i still need to practice a lot of things in UE and Blender. Thank you so much for helping a beginner like me, it helps so much!!!
