New Kid on the Block

Hello community. This is my first post and I would really appreciate feedback and suggestions/advice.

I am brand spanking new to gaming developer community and I really impressed with what UE4 offers. However, even though I have been doing a lot reading and researching on what’s possible for me to do myself, there is still so many questions I wanted to address before I make the plunge to learn the software, spend money, dedicating time outside of my job and start developing my first game ever. It’s exciting and daunting and even a bit nerve wracking all at the same time. I know what skills I have and most certainly know what skills I don’t have. I am quite confident in my level design and 3D world building skills and with some of the paid asset packs that are offered, I might be able to build the game world myself.

But when it comes to creating the assets myself, 3D modeling, animations, armor sets, particle effects, GUI, inventory systems, …ouch. Not so good at those areas. How are people going about getting these things developed without being a part of an LLC? I’ve seen some websites about hiring such artists but I do have the income to fork out what they charge per hour. If anybody could point out some resources I could look at, or have some general knowledge to share with me I would genuinely appreciate your feedback.

Hello and Welcome!!

One of the fantastic things about Epic and UE4 is they provide a lot of free assets that are downloadable from the launcher to get you started. Take a look through the marketplace and you’ll see HQ packs like the Open World Demo, Infinite Blade series and others. They are all for use in your project no questions asked.

As for learning what goes into 3D art and all its facets. The whole pipeline…it can be daunting. I suggested checking out an amazing tutorial guy on youtube called Arrimus 3D his link is here. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSLLdTBwLMfTKWS56tOiQpw There are literally hundreds of 3D modelling, texturing, Mapping and every other portion of the pipeline to get you started in modelling.

An UE veteran is Tesla Dev. https://www.youtube.com/user/TeslaUE4/videos He offers so many tutorials for Blueprint programming (No code experience needed) that you will virtually find everything you need.

From these two amazing individuals I have learned a wealth of knowledge this past year. I suggest pick your angle…programming or art. Then dive in.

Hope I helped a little

Oh and there are from time to time groups that pop up in the Got Skills, Looking for work subforum that are basically groups starting projects together. Also check the Unreal Engine subreddit for the same!!! Just keep your eyes open!!

Such a fantastic reply! Thank you, I really appreciate this.

Welcome to the community Echostrain!

Winterstone pretty much covered everything. Be sure to check out the UE4 documentation for more learning, and the answerhub if you have any questions. The Unreal Engine Youtube Channel is also a goldmine of information. The UE4 Marketplace is a great place to find affordable resources for game development. If you’re interested in something that you don’t see offered there, feel free to make a suggestion in the official thread. Lastly, the community here is very helpful! Don’t hesitate to ask us any questions! Good luck with your game design, we are glad you chose to join us in the UE4 community! =)
