Why break something that works? And why introduce around 13 issues from nowhere? Its so much harder to build now and given the previous track record of the content browser, those issues will now not be fixed, so essentially last update massively downgraded the content browser for no reason or benefit to creators.
Please stop doing this, we don’t care about the chapter/season UI to match, we care about making levels and now its way harder to do so. Oh and this is not a muscle memory thing cause I went with an open mind and got frustrated in the first minute. Reasons:
On Create|Home, can only scroll when hovering on titles:
Search doesn’t “show all” by default, and it shows nothing or a filtered category when you search (confusing cause what you search may not be in the results) and you have to click it to see the results (extra step)
Generally, search is the thing that was heavily impacted, before it was “type” then find, now you have to navigate 2-3 pages (or press keys) to even find the search, then press “show all”
Icons are much harder to see cause they are smaller
Island settings ordering is not based on frequency of change. You press player for example, first thing you need is health, like the old menu, but no, now you get to hide your back bling as the most important option.
(MAJOR) When searching something then you close the content browser, all your search and opened folders go away, you now have to find everything again
(MAJOR) Also if you close and re-open content browser, you can’t open galleries anymore, as seen on video above
Tab key doesn’t close content browser anymore
(MAJOR) Galleries (most used tab in building) is not the default tab anymore, you now have to pick what you want first (category) and that action alone is around x3000 extra clicks per area created with level design in live edit/creative, just from this new issue alone.
(MAJOR) Also you can’t see full galleries now, most of them have icons that are not visible and make the use of content browser impossible:
Please test UX and bugs next time, because now we have to wait for all of these to be fixed so that we can be as efficient as before. Nobody asked for this UI overhaul, and next time you do one, try to improve on the existing infrastructure instead. I am so annoyed by this because this majorly disrupts all my work and projects, since this is the tool I use to design maps. It is absolutely unacceptable for whoever approved this to ship too.
EDIT: The above were day 1 finds, but there is more:
Cannot select multiple tags anymore to filter your search better (like “Tilted Towers” and “Building”).
The list on the left has a large font (see bullet 8 for the image) and large spacing between the options, meaning you no longer see as many categories as before, requiring you to scroll. It seems small, but in the context of opening this menu thousands of times, adding an extra step there affects productivity.
(MAJOR) Some galleries have now missing icons and cannot see at all what they are or select a specific actor. Here is an example from the Dusty Depot Gallery:
Sometimes I would open Content Browser and see this window, which doesn’t have any option for me to select galleries and continue working, which adds confusion and annoyance. This seems like a bugged view because create home is different (picture 2)
We greatly appreciate this actionable feedback Wert and people are actively working on many of the points you’ve raised.
Additionally we’re looking at how these changes were released without some of our internal teams spending cycles with them and providing feedback on them.
Thanks for your feedback on the new Creative Inventory Browser and My Island UI. Whether you’ve encountered challenges or have suggestions for further enhancements, we’re all ears.
The UI change we implemented in the recent update enhances scalability and sets the stage for ongoing improvements. This is just the start.
We’re continuing to work on the UI, improving the functionality of the home page with global search, and more. We also have bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements on the roadmap, and we look forward to delivering all of these changes and improvements to the community soon.
Please continue to share your thoughts on the latest update through this post. Thank you for being such a valuable Fortnite Creative, UEFN, and community member.
Thanks again for taking action on the new UI, there are around 19 items that I posted above that would bring it back to the efficiency of the previous iteration. If those items are addressed, an extra one would be to not spawn the asset in a random angle, but an angle that is aligned to the building grid, because atm we need to angle reset all architecture when we spawn it and it add multiple extra steps that we didn’t have before (maybe not UI related, but content browser functionality).
Good news is that the previous UI had a massive bug where if you selected an actor to spawn and went to spawn it, 40% of the times you ll just close the menu instead of spawning it, but that has been fixed with this version, and that’s great
Overall though I feel this UI is much better, it feels much more modern. There were many issues in the old UI so I was practically begging for this to be a thing, and thankfully Epic delivered. They could make some small improvements according to feedback like this.
I was so surprised how difficult it was to navigate the new UI even though I have been using creative since the begging. One of the biggest hurdles is for controllers, it is probably 10x as hard and slow to do things now. Here are some of my concerns with it and things I do not care for:
Getting to the phone menu is twice as long and you have to click so many things just to get to that menu. Normally you might open that phone menu, so something, close it, and then open it up again. That would normally take mere seconds. Now doing that takes a couple mins.
Nothing is intuitive and a lot of options are hidden. Settings and things are hidden because they are sub menus now and makes it hard to find things and navigate.
Trying to get props and devices is not intuitive and way to clunky and difficult. The menus used to be so easy, now I can’t even use Live Edit because I have to click like 10 buttons to get to something and multiply that by the time it takes and it becomes very inefficient and time consuming.
Overall, I would say it’s too clunky, too complicated to get to things (you have to click too many steps), it’s not intuitive, and it’s very inefficient and slow.
Hopefully you all can rework it to be more like it used to be: easy, efficient, self explanatory.
Definitely not a fan of the new UI in creative as its so difficult to navigate compared to what we had previously and adds so much more time to the world building process than is necessary. I’m all for updating and improving things when its needed but this was a step in the wrong direction and added unnecessary difficulty to a system where none existed. Certainly Creative had its issues but, for the most part, it was easy to navigate, easy to find things, and far more intuitive than what we have now.
I used to jump between UEFN and live edit to build as some things were easier to put together in live edit than UEFN. However with the update to the creative layout I now find it takes more time trying to find things in the live edit menus. Even with a 4k monitor it can be difficult to see what’s actually in the galleries when you’re scrolling looking for things and the only option may be to throw down a whole gallery to see if what you’re looking for is in there. I also find that sometimes when I select things in a live edit session I can’t actually move them and need to put away the phone tool so I can deselect the object or device.
It also doesn’t help when the search bar and back button disappear as you navigate, and I feel that these should be pinned to the top of the screen for ease of access.
The old user interface was 100% more user friendly. This new UI enhances nothing for the creator. Its almost like it was designed and implemented by someone whose never used creative to build anything. Personally I think the design team should have spoken to some of the top creators and maybe let them beta test a design, but I don’t know if that would have been possible.
Settings would reset randomly, entire menu would close when pressing normal buttons like print screen, it was very easy to accidentally change values
I posted that comment before I discovered that none of these have been fixed. I still prefer the look though
After starting to build my first new game since the update, the gallery issue has to be one of the most annoying. There might be more issues than before at this point like you all have been saying
