Need help with Unknown Cook Failure [UE4.27]

Been beating my head against a wall for over a week trying to cook this project, thought I would try a hail mary and ask for some help in the meant time.

Narrowed it down to 38 errors and 1 warning. I’m working entirely in blueprint with a cloned project (I keep making a new copy once I have found a possible location of an error so I always have a “baseline” at my lowest amount of errors), I have tried;

  • Deleted pretty much everything just to get a successful cook (Success)
  • Unlinked (but left floating about completely unlinked) every Set-By-Ref
  • Deleting off folders within UE and then individual blueprints and widgets
    • Fixing up any broken references between BP’s (I’m getting better at only having soft references but a lot of earlier work I haven’t gotten around to reworking out hard references…)
    • Deleting Saved/Intermediate/Build
    • Opening literally every Blueprint/Struct/WidgetBP/AnimBP and recompile/saving it
    • Validating Assets in folder (Content) and doing “fix up redirectors” on same folder
    • Making backups at milestones (discovering general area of things causing errors along the way)

I’ve found a BP that is definitely causing issues, so I’ve been trying to delete off sections of code in it, going as far as deleting off just whats attached to an event function, one function at a time and then doing the whole process from above each time.

Eventually my errors will jump to 70 something. So I think, oh that paticular function is the issue, right? No, I repeatedly copy paste a fresh version of the project and delete the same stuff as I did right before the error count jumped and there is no jump. I delete more of the same stuff I tried deleting and nothing, till randomly after batches of deletion it decides to start jumping again (even with blueprinting that I had deleted in other versions to no issues).

I tried deleting some of the more exotic variables in my structs keeping them to just basic variable types and that didn’t seem to do anything, going to keep trying different kinds of things, just hoping someone might be able to help out.

Is this a downloaded build, or did you compile the engine?

I’m confused by what you mean about downloaded build thing sorry. I created an FPS basic project and built my stuff around that. As for the packaging I just go to File > Package Product > Windows (64 Bit). I don’t remember doing anything involving the packaging settings and stuff in my editor preferences or anything.

It looks like it’s failing to compile a blueprint, and crashing.

Which one, I have no idea.

Do all your blueprints compile? ( I know that might be a lot ).

– Other things you could try —

Right click on the content folder and choose ‘validate assets’, it might take a while.

You could also disable all platforms other than Windows in the packaging settings. And make sure to turn off plugins you’re not using ( you might have enabled them to try something, but never used it ).

As far as I can tell they all compile with a green tick unless there is a type I am forgetting (I go to the content folder and used the filter option for Blueprints/Enumeration/Structure/Widget Blueprint/Animation Blueprint and go through each one regularly and recompile and save as I tried to narrow down the issue, even editing every blueprint (so the compile button would change to orange ? to signal it needed to be recompiled, then compile, all producing green ticks). When validating, it will tell me all assets passed.

I have found a particular BP (a key one too) that when I first open it after starting the project will actually produce the === Handled ensure: === errors on its own (without packaging or anything, just opening it up in blueprint editor the output log will produce that slew of errors). At one point I tried deleting it and fixing any references (which jumped the errors caused and could not get them to go back down despite doing all the Saved/intermediate deletes and validation and recompile of every individual thing).

Yesterday I created another blank FPS project (which packages fine from the get go) and tried migrating that offending BP to it (which naturally took a bunch of other things with it which I expected). This results in packaging errors with the same number of error counts so I’m sure whatever is wrong is something has been narrowed down to these.

My next step when I get the time will be to delete all of my struct variables. Is it possible a BP can just be plain corrupted in some way? I have tried deleting all functions/macros/graphs in this BP before and it only seemed to produce more errors…

i don’t know. but that sounds to me like something is fundamentally wrong. not just “this function is wrong” but something broke.

it might just be a cascade of errors from one error.

it smells a bit like a broken or missing plugin to me.

mabye a struct definition is wrong, or it changed the name, or maybe is not exported.

depending on your experience, what i would personally do in a case like this, assuming you don’t actually know what the source of the error is, is:

  • backup
  • delete stuff until it compiles.
  • re add little by little until it doesn’t
  • fix whatever is breaking stuff.
  • keep adding.

it can be a very long process though

Thank you so much for your help, I have been making multiple backups and culling folders slowly and recompiling everything to see what will reduce the error count (and hopefully narrow down to what offending BP it might be).

Currently I have made a fresh project and migrated one particular BP (which brought a host of other things with it, which is ok) and have been deleting structs one by one. As of writing this I have run into one particular struct that after deleting, completely broke this offending BP (project crashes just trying to open the BP).

Ran out of time but later going to try deleting all instances of this struct var within that BP and see what happens from there.

To be fair, this particular struct was basically my “Inventory Item” struct (which holds 20 different variables). I have been slowly adding/modifying this variable over the course of my project and it is starting to look like the culprit.

Although I can research it later, is there a known issue with structs having too many variables in it? This one has a bunch of vanilla ones like bool and int but also has an int-int map, a texture 2D, an Int Array and a couple of enums. I use this sucker in arrays and stuff too.

Forgot to mention in regards to plugins, I’m pretty sure I only ever touched one (Apex Destruction), which I’ve tried disabling earlier. It still appears disabled in the fresh project I migrated the bad BP too.

Ok, that sounds like it!

Yes, you might need to remove that BP totally. But you can’t just delete it. You need to make a new BP, and make sure everything is dependent on this new one, before removing the old one.

Broken references will break packaging, for sure.
