Need help with ISM's in blueprint

I have seen videos were people duplicate and position instanced static mesh components of a blueprint, in the level by click/alt and drag just as you would do with any other actor in a level.
When I do that, the components in my blueprint show as “deleted” in the outliner as soon as I select or move the blueprint in the level. Also I can’t select the components of the blueprint in the level.

(The blueprint’s purpose is just to combine multiple instances into a single actor).
