I have a visual (2D) project in which I’d like to use Metahumans. The end result is a document that contains images only.
In the EULA, it indicates that Metahumans must be rendered in Unreal Engine. No problem.
My question is:
Can the Unreal Engine render, for example, be retouched into another image that wasn’t producted in Unreal Engine, such as a photo of a building lobby, or seated in a render of a 3d racing car?
The EULA contains this language (emphasis mine):
" 6. Ownership
Epic and its licensors own all title, ownership rights, and intellectual property rights in the MetaHuman Technology, and all related data. The MetaHuman, MetaHuman Creator, the MetaHuman Creator logo, and Rig Logic are trademarks or registered trademarks of Epic. All rights granted to you under this Agreement are granted by express license only and not by sale. No license or other rights shall be created hereunder by implication, estoppel, or otherwise, even if necessary or useful to practice or otherwise use Downloaded Characters or your products that incorporate or depict rendered Downloaded Characters. The consideration provided to Epic under this Agreement is only for the License. Any other rights would require an additional license and separate consideration, and nothing in this Agreement requires or will be treated to require Epic to grant any additional licenses."
I don’t know what they’re trying to say here.
The FAQ says:
"Can I use characters generated in MetaHuman Creator outside of Unreal Engine?
Characters generated in MetaHuman Creator, including those in the sample project, are licensed for use in Unreal Engine projects. This means that you must render MetaHumans with Unreal Engine; you cannot render them outside of Unreal Engine."
and
"Can I use characters generated in MetaHuman Creator for simulation applications?
Yes! As long as you use the MetaHuman characters as a presentation layer of your simulation application. However, note that MetaHuman characters may not be used in deep learning applications (see above)."
I don’t know what a “presentation layer” is, but this doesn’t seem to stipulate that the end result in case of a simulation must be Unreal Engine, only, as above, that the Metahuman content is rendered in UE.
Would be nice to find an actual, official, non-legalese guide for this…
Anyone have some clarification?
Thanks.
