Hi, I am new to unreal engine and have enjoyed using the software. I have been watching unreal tutorials and creating small projects to get familiar with what I’ve learned. Ultimately I would like to develop a playable game eventually. I have already started on the environmental concept art, modelling some assets and which genre of game. The issue that I would like advice on is what type of game would be most suitable for someone such as myself who is just starting. I have 3 options that I would like to pursue: an open world, a game where levels are selected from the main screen and multi-player. Something that is just hard enough to be challenging but still obtainable for a novice such as myself. Any advice is welcome and thanks to you all in advance.
P.S. the genre that I have chosen is a racing game
Hey, as someone who was experienced programmer before I started using UE, I would strongly advise not to go with open world. When you want to make a game, don’t shoot for the stars right away. Create something simple, but really simple. Having a finished product is not just making game. You also have to do
- Marketing
- Publishing on platforms (Steam, Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, Epic games store… etc)
- Testing
- Organize team
- Finances
- Tons of other stuff
And none of the mentioned above is easy. If you go for something big at the start, you will get overwhelmed and quit. Open world is probably most complicated game. Racing… I don’t know… meh. What type of racing? I’m about to publish Combat racing game, and it was not an easy trip… trust me I know
Thank you for the advice. I’ll do more research and planning on the points you provided.
Thank you for the advice. When I initially started game development some years ago, I wanted to make an FPS game but quickly lost interest thinking that it was too hard so I studied up on 3D modelling instead, I’ve always wanted to make a car and only now after several years have a realized that I actually should have started with a racing game back then cause I was really interested, still am, in car culture as that it the environment that I grew up in.
