Need a lap top for Unreal Engine and After Effects

Hi all,

I am planning to get a laptop for both Unreal Engine and After Effects. I need a powerful laptop that can run both programs plus some other Adobe apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign at the same time. Could anyone give me some recommendations?

Any help appreciated! Thanks!

Hi there!

Great to see you diving into both Unreal Engine and Adobe apps! Finding the right laptop to handle these tools efficiently is crucial, especially if you’re running multiple demanding programs simultaneously. I’d be happy to help guide you!

Key Features to Look For:

  1. CPU (Processor)
Unreal Engine and Adobe apps love high clock speeds and multiple cores. Look for a laptop with:
  • Intel Core i7/i9 (12th or 13th Gen) or AMD Ryzen 7/9 (6000 or 7000 series).
  • Aim for at least 6 cores, but 8 or more is better for heavy multitasking.
  1. GPU (Graphics Card)
A powerful GPU is essential for Unreal Engine and After Effects (especially for rendering and GPU-accelerated effects).
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 or higher (ideally RTX 4070 or 4080 for future-proofing).
  • For high-end needs, consider NVIDIA RTX Studio laptops optimized for creators.
  1. RAM (Memory)
Multitasking Adobe apps and Unreal Engine requires plenty of RAM.
  • 32GB is ideal for smooth performance, but 16GB is the minimum.
  • Look for a laptop that allows upgrades if you start with 16GB.
  1. Storage
SSD storage ensures faster load times and smoother operation.
  • 1TB SSD is a great starting point, especially if you handle large Unreal Engine projects and video files.
  • If budget allows, go for laptops with dual SSD slots or hybrid storage options.
  1. Display
A high-quality screen is a must for design and video work.
  • At least a 15.6-inch, QHD (2560x1440) or 4K display with 100% sRGB or AdobeRGB coverage.
  • For After Effects and Photoshop, color accuracy matters, so prioritize IPS or OLED panels.
  1. Portability vs Power
If you need to move around often, aim for a lighter laptop (e.g., MSI Creator Z series or ASUS ROG Zephyrus). Otherwise, heavier models like Dell XPS or Lenovo Legion offer more power.

Recommended Models:

Here are some options to consider, depending on your budget:

  • Mid-Range (~$2,000)
    • MSI Creator Z16: Great balance of performance, display quality, and portability.
    • Razer Blade 15 (Base): Sleek, powerful, and great for creative workflows.
  • High-End ($2,500+)
    • Dell XPS 17: Incredible display and performance for multitasking.
    • ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16: Dual screens for extra productivity and high-end specs for Unreal Engine.
    • MacBook Pro 16 (M1/M2 Max): If you’re open to macOS, it’s excellent for Adobe apps, though Unreal Engine support can be more limited.
  • Budget-Friendly (~$1,500)
    • ASUS TUF Dash 15: Affordable yet powerful with RTX 4060 and decent build quality.
    • Lenovo Legion 5 Pro: Great performance for the price and reliable for creative workloads.

Final Tips:

  • If you’re serious about Unreal Engine, prioritize the GPU and RAM above all.
  • For Adobe apps, a high-quality display and fast SSD are game-changers.
  • Don’t forget to invest in good cooling pads for laptops, as these programs can push hardware to its limits.

Hope this helps you make a decision! Let us know which laptop you end up choosing or if you need more advice. Happy creating!

Best regards,

Hi there,

For running Unreal Engine, After Effects, and other Adobe apps simultaneously, you’ll need a high-performance laptop with the following specs:

  1. Processor (CPU): At least an Intel Core i7 (10th gen or higher) or AMD Ryzen 7 for strong multi-core performance.
  2. Graphics (GPU): NVIDIA RTX 3060 or better for Unreal Engine rendering and GPU-accelerated tasks in After Effects.
  3. RAM: 16GB minimum, but 32GB is ideal for handling multiple programs at once.
  4. Storage: 512GB SSD at minimum for fast loading times; 1TB is preferred for large projects.
  5. Display: 15-inch or larger, with at least 1080p resolution (preferably 4K for better visual clarity, especially with Unreal Engine).
  6. Battery Life: Good battery life (8+ hours), though demanding tasks will consume more.

Recommended Laptops:

  1. Razer Blade 15 (2023)

    • Intel Core i7/i9
    • NVIDIA RTX 4060/4070
    • 16GB/32GB RAM
    • 512GB/1TB SSD
  2. Apple MacBook Pro (16-inch, M2 Pro or M2 Max)

    • Apple M2 Pro/Max chip
    • 16GB/32GB RAM (upgradable)
    • 512GB/1TB SSD
    • Excellent for Adobe apps, but Unreal Engine on Mac is less optimal.
  3. Dell XPS 15 (2023)

    • Intel Core i7/i9
    • NVIDIA RTX 3050/3060
    • 16GB/32GB RAM
    • 512GB/1TB SSD
  4. MSI GE76 Raider

    • Intel Core i7/i9
    • NVIDIA RTX 3060/3070
    • 16GB/32GB RAM
    • 1TB SSD

These laptops should be able to handle the requirements of Unreal Engine, After Effects, and the Adobe suite efficiently.

Thanks and I hope I can little help you!!
