Some friends and I recently figured we’d pick up UE and try to make something with it. We are programmers mainly, but one friend is a 3d modeler and has done some animation work. This is our first “actually trying” project and we don’t really even know what type of game, other than something fun. Knowing us and the things that amuse us, it is highly likely that whatever we create will include crude, slapstick humor, offensive language and content everywhere. I’m sure this poses a problem when trying to get the game out. We don’t really have a profit motive, we just want to create a fun multiplayer experience to see what all we’re capable of.
Our end goal is to publish it to an established place like steam or whatever else there is out there. (PC Platform)
So with that said, do the content policies out there understand satire and/or crude dark humor? Can you release a game for “mature” audiences. For example, if this game had chappele-show style racial commentary and hilarious voiceovers they’d surely break a lot of rules, being misinterpreted as “Hateful”, etc.
I just want to know how conservative we need to be to utilize the big markets without having to go overly indie with it.
I think you can release “mature” game, but you cannot post “mature” stuff here. Also for “mature” games i am almost certain that Epic does not want their or unreal logo. But they did not complain about recent mature games being made, like that recent one where you mindlessly kill people (forgot its name).
So no womanly nipple (usa is known for Mamillaphobia), but you can always photoshop manly nipples in. No nude or “artistic nude” pictures. And no cussing words even on screenshots (esp on pictures, as this may be taken as avoiding word filter). And you should be safe here. This forum is not age restricted, so normal rules for such pages apply here.
Ps.
I am also tired of being oppressed by politically correct people, the truth will win someday.
Basically I’m not going for doing anything nude or excessively violent. Honestly I’d find the mindless killing in any call of duty game far worse. The key difference here would be the crude humor, and more specifically some of it which is highly related to racial stereotyptical humor (Much like many rated PG-13 movies have no problem in doing)
And furthermore, it’s not targeting any specific race, its a satire on how stupid we are looking at each other with these mindsets. For example, I see a game like GTA being far worse in every aspect that includes humor similar to people like dave chappelle and etc. Crudge, vulgar, but at the end of the day exists to prove a point.
I don’t want to go further into the project without having some comfort knowing my efforts would not be in vain. (As well as the team)
more examples, I got some hilarious prank call friends who are in for voice overs who can do some hilarious accents. “Racial slurs” - is a politically sensitive term, given the use of the N word and the outrage it can draw and etc… as such the other corresponding ones for various races. If this game pokes fun at all of them equally, but with hilarious polish- and models, and (hopefully well QA’d user experience)- I would play the hell out of it amongst friends to say the least. We’ve even hacked previous online games for LAN play to make them hilarious.
