I usually get a 30-40MB download speed when installing games, which was the case for installing UE5. However, at around 20% completion it dropped to 3MBs and has been like this for a good 45 minutes. This is my second time trying to download it because the same thing happened before and I decided to restart the download to fix it.
It sounds very strange, however it could be the case that it is installing files and that the download is blocked until said files have been installed. If not for your network connection, the up connection to the Epic servers could be slow.
Just wait if you are only installing this for your own PC. If this has to be done for 100 PCs, that’s another story.
Edit: Seems like someone else have had the same issue, I started downloading UE5 and my download speed tanked a quarter of the way though.… I just noticed that you have been double posting, so never mind
I have the same issue, and the biggest problem to me is that if i pause it and then click resume it says the directory needs to be empty and makes me delete all the progress so far. Epic needs to fix this
I can confirm, I admit, I have quite a slow network at only 200/100 mbps but UE5 downloads at about 800 kb/s thats like, INSANELY slow.
In contrast, I can dowload GTA 5 on steam in around 45-60 min and thats over 100gb while this engine takes hours to download and thats only 20.6 gb.
It’s quite bad tbh,
Same issue here…first 4GB of UE5 download I get up to 70mbps then it tanks and remains around 1-2 mbps until it usually just fails. So aggravating! What’s up Epic?? I can download from other services with a steady 50-60 mbps consistently. This is on a 1gbps internet connection.
Same issue, tried a few ‘solutions’ from other posts, unfortunately issue persists
Currently having the same issue. Anyone know what’s up with this?
Same here, trying to download UE 5.0.3 keeps slowing down. Tried to restart the launcher and resume the download after ~3 hours at only 39% completion, only to have to restart the whole download due the issue mentioned above of the target directory not being empty (obviously).
Weirdly enough I downloaded the same engine version a couple weeks back and everything was fine, downloaded in about 30 minutes. And that was downloading to a HDD, now I’m downloading to a SSD.
Same in here
Hey @alberto, Are you checking out the download options? I know for UE5 there comes a lot of things other than just the core engine pre-checked, which can cause some slower reading/writing times in general.
UE5 is a pretty taxing software for a computer to run, it harnesses a lot of the raw power a computer has, and a lot of times, at least I’ve noticed with myself, my problems derive from my own hardware limitations.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

Same here. 8 have 1tb download speeds and this is ridiculous
1000mb/s in here
So I had to redownload the engine again today and the speed was back to normal (~20 minutes).
At the beginning, I had presumed that was my network issue, but when I find out many users have common problems with me, thus I assume the bandwidth of Epic Games’s servers is not enough to support so many downloading requests!
Same issue, and more aggravating is that the download maybe have failure completely in the mid, the download speed tanks to 0mbps, and you will never know why, and it is not the network issue and I am watching YouTube at the same time.
I don’t think most users have your problems, which hardware limitations. On the contrary, I presume most users have very good equipment, they could download WoW completely in around 1 to 2 hours, their computers could run various video games smoothly like COD, Tome raid, Assassin Creed, etc
