MUTOOLS - Cinematics Production Pipeline Tools for Maya and UnrealEngine

Hi guys, I want to share a tool we are developing .

This is a pipeline tool, to be precise, it is a tool for making cinematics in Unreal Engine easier and more efficient.

Our company has been using the powerful rendering capabilities of Unreal Engine to produce 3D cinematic animations, but Unreal Engine’s animation asset system is actually not designed for this work.We usually need to re-import a large number of files during animation production and modification.

I believe that people usually use fbx to import skeletal animation, but a lot of very well-designed character rigging development usually uses a large number of deformers, including discrete bone joints, which makes us have to use abc cache for file transfer. Of course, everyone who uses Unreal Engine for animation production has tried abc will know it is really a painful experience.

We think that frequent import will make us waste time in this process, and the super large abc generated by complex VFX basically has no possibility of importing. If we can eliminate all intermediate files and get the result of polygons directly from Maya, wouldn’t it be the best way?

So we designed MUTOOLS to solve the communication problem between Maya and Unrealengine.
Unlike maya livelink, mutools does not limit Maya’s asset types. Currently, it supports frame synchronization steaming to unreal for all polygon models.

***In this video, you can see that we have created Unreal Maya assets. ***

  1. *After opening Unreal Maya assets, you can configure the version of Maya, whether it is local or remote. *
  2. The plug-in can read Maya’s registry information and can pull up Maya batch in the background. You can open Maya in UE, and you can see that after Maya is turned on, the log information is printed in the Unreal viewport.
  3. Then you can open the Maya file in Unreal, select the object to be steamed to complete the synchronization transmission.

In this video, you can see how quickly imported unreal objects can be given textures.*

  1. MUTOOLS has created a new editor Modes. Double-click to select the model object and then highlight the selected object, and you can assign unreal material. We also support click and frame selection with adding reversing activites.**
  2. We can also can move the object around within the component in order to manage with the overlaped object.
  3. Unreal maya assets can save the specified relationship of these materials, even if you open it next time, there will be no problems.

In this video, you can see that we opened a previous work scene, modified the animation and performed a workflow of rendering output

  1. MUTOOLS can open the previously configured maya file to restore the previous work.
  2. In the sequencer, adding a dedicated timeline synchronization tool can update Maya’s polygon results frame by frame, if not added, it will not be synchronized
  3. MUTOOLS will automatically optimize the transmission data, such as rigid body animation, and only need to update the position. If the polygon changes/deforms, all vertices are transmitted frame by frame.
  4. The hot update of the animation is also very easy to achieve. After the animator modifies the animation frame, It only needs to reload the updated maya file.
  5. MUTOOLS supports sequencer rendering output and the latest Film Render tool.

In this video, you will see the process of importing VFX using MUTOOLS

  1. nCloth cloth simulation, mutools can be directly imported, even if nCache is finished, MUTOOLS can control Maya to continue calculating cloth results in Unreal.
  2. Houdini fluid simulation, this is a water fluid simulation created in Maya using the Houdini engine. Each frame is a huge mesh.
  3. MUTOOLS supports any VFX that takes polygons as the result. Such as m**uscle rigging, large-scale destruction… all can be supported by MUTOOLS!
    • Our UnrealEngine 4.26 plugin are going to support volume VFX in the future.

**In this video, you will see more possibilities of MUTOOLS, contain ***

  1. Multiple Maya computing terminals are running at the same time, MUTOOLS also supports remote access to Maya, so that the UnrealEngine working and rendering terminal does not need to install Maya software.
  2. Execute the maya script (mel/python) in unreal, and extend the tool shelf through the blueprint —— Create a small tool to create a helix in the scene.
  3. We hope that you can use these two small cases to imagine that we can build various tools based on MUTOOLS in the future to expand the capabilities of Unreal Engine.

Hope you guys like our works. :o

This plug-in is still under development. We also expect to create more feature and improve transmission performance.

So we are welcome friends from the community join our Alpha test. The test is free, but because of our team Technical support personnel are limited, so I have to provide limited tool copies.

If you think MUTOOLS can help you saving time and make animation production in UnrealEngine more efficiency and you want to use it in your project,

Please don’t hesitate to send an email to mutools@idawa.cn

We may need you to provide the following information: your name/nickname, contact information, an introduction to the project you plan to use mutools, I will contact you as soon as possible!

If you have any question you can post feed back here ~

We are also recruiting development partners global no matter full-time/part-time, we are hoping you to join our team to create awesome works together, just send us email~
