Multiple Crashes with UE 5.3

nVidia RTX 3090
Win 11 23H2
UE 5.3.2

I’m at my wits end. I’m brand new to UE, so I have no clue what I could be doing to cause these crashes.

Until now the crashes weren’t consistent. Could happen any time for seemingly random reasons. At least now, I can produce a consistent crash by trying to drag in a static mesh which was downloaded from the quixel bridge.

I’ve been following this tutorial from YouTube, and while UE has been crashing multiple times all along the way, I’ve usually been able to power through it. But now this is a complete show stopper. I can’t progress any further.

When it crashes trying to drag a static mesh from my content drawer, I rarely get a message. But here are some that I have gotten:

The most consistent error message I’m getting is when I try to load the project again after it has crashed:
“Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource. Make sure your video card has the minimum required memory, try lowering the resolution and/or closing other applications that are running. Exiting…”

A crash I was getting previously but haven’t for a while is “Crash inside the platform compiler:”

I have monitored my GPU usage using GPU-Z and my max temps during all of this never get above about 62C, memory usage never goes above 5GB and clock speed never exceeds 2000MHz.

I feel like I have tried everything short of a complete reformat, but the computer was only just recently set up. Regardless, here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Full DDU uninstall of the graphics drivers.
  • Reinstalling only Studio drivers.
  • DDU and then install Game Ready drivers.
  • One suggestion from a forum post was to install Visual Studio with the “Game development with C++” workload, no changes.
  • Verifying the UE Install
  • Uninstalling and Reinstalling UE
  • Tried installing 5.2 and “downgrading” the project to 5.2, but it wouldn’t open

I’m a video editor, so I’ve got your typical suite of content creation programs installed (Adobe CC) but not much else. No games. I just don’t know what else to try.

Just tried creating a new project and it immediately crashed again with a new Access Violation error.

Immediately after I got the Video Memory error described above.

Then I opened Unreal Again and got another new crash, but it still opened UE to the stock 3rd Person map. Until I closed the crash reporter, then UE closed again.

It would be one thing if the crashes were consistent. Either in timing/cause or even in the reported error. But the varied nature of it is driving me nuts.

I don’t get crashes in my other software. Not even Premiere (which is well known for its random crashes).

Just to add to the ongoing problems.

I have now tried also installing 5.1.1 and 5.0.3, in addition to 5.2.1 already installed. All three of them crash on boot when trying to create a new project.

I really don’t understand what could be the problem. But I hope someone else can see this and offer an easy solution.

me too

So, in the end it turned out to be a bad CPU. Other quirks pointed me to test each component individually. When I got to Prime95, the system crashed immediately when executing on specific cores.

Sent the machine back for repairs and came back with a new CPU, now everything works as it should. Retested the same project in 5.3 before upgrading to 5.4 and it works in both versions.

So if you’re getting multiple crashes like I was, maybe check your individual components to see if there’s a physical cause.
