Movement grid 4 turn based level (not random)

Hello there.

Im thinking about turn-based “isometric” view game/level and stuck with one simple thing.
I wonder, how can i create some sort of grid on top of level landscape? There are tutorials on youtube and here with meshes(invisible?), placed on surface, or procedural map generation, but is it the only and most efficient way to create this kind of map? I dont need grid on entire level, only where player can move, with highlights on select/mouse over. Besides this meshes cost some tris, few but still. Should i place them by hand or what.

Whole idea is to make smth like XCOM movement system.

Just need some punches in right direction, guys. I think i will handle any technical moments. :slight_smile:
