It’s actually crazy how this issue hasn’t been fixed as of 5.3.2, or a solution found. Makes creating landscapes or placing foliage etc nigh impossible.
Weirdly enough RediOne1’s advice of using the trackpad worked at first, but then it reverted back to the high sensitivity again. Maybe restarting the engine would work, but I can’t do that seemingly every few minutes.
EDIT: so far the only solution is from May 2018 by the OP: switch to windows. I just picked up my first tower in years and will be deving on there from now on.
No, it still doesn’t work properly in “unlit” mode. Maybe the mouse sensitivity drops sometimes. But it is still unrealistic to draw on the landscape.
Maybe the developers are aware of this problem, which is why they do not answer such questions in the forum.
However, this problem is definitely related to the interaction of the engine with Mac, because if you try to install a virtual machine and install Win + UE5 on your Mac, you will notice that drawing on the landscape is very comfortable and there are no problems with mouse speed that appear in the engine compiled for Mac.
I came to the conclusion that only the developers can fix the problem. But a very big question to them is why they have not done it yet. This is a very small, but very annoying bug for designers.
Running 5.4.2 on MBP M3 Max, still an issue. I do recall when I was using an Intel iMac that this wasn’t something that was an issue. I believe I was using 5.1 or 5.2 at the time. Switching to Unlit doesn’t help at all. I will try next with maybe a wired mouse and trackpad.
Now on 5.4.4 and it continues to happen even when on the main laptop display. It’s almost as if the curser has inertia. Longer you paint, the more erratic the movement. I’ve been making individual clicks, but it’s a pain to do anything.
Possible solve: clicking once on the camera speed icon, then not clicking anywhere else solves this issue. It’s still a pain though because if I move the camera or change tools, it comes back. I believe someone else in this string mentioned this too? I found a few other posts about this too.
It’s ridiculous that 9 years after this post it still hasn’t been fixed. I came looking for a fix and found I need to build a PC after 15 years on a Mac.
After loads of trial and error, using input devices (heck, I even tried the head/camera controls in the accessibility options), I feel like this all comes down to how the mouse/paint tool is refreshing? If that’s even a thing. In simple scenes where there is very little lighting or even better in Unlit mode, the painting & landscape tools are much more responsive and less erratic. I have also noticed that the farther away you are painting something, the more erratic it becomes. That and it seems to coincide with how long I am holding down the mouse button too. For example, if I’m painting, adding foliage, modifying landscapes, etc, if I’m modifying something in the distance, it’s almost impossible to use, but if my camera is right next to it, it’s more manageable. Maybe this all comes down to simply Unreal Engine isn’t meant to be used in a macOS environment (which I hate to say).
I’m not sure if this is simply an Unreal issue either. I also use C4D with Redshift and I’m seeing limitations there too with hardware ray-tracing.
