Motion Matching not working

Setup:
Third Person starter with some retargeted Lyra animation to a Synty character. I believe I did the retargeting correctly, but something is obviously off. I watched several videos about how to get motion matching to work and from the picture things look good (sort of). It knows what is fwd, bwd, left, and right. However, only the left and right animation work in pie. When i go forward or backwards the player is in idle.

I did notice in the picture that there is no blue line for forward and backwards. I’m guessing that is why the animations do not playing in game, but I don’t have to foggiest idea of what to debug.

I’m assuming I did something wrong with the animation retargeting, but how come left and right are good but fwd and bwd are not? They were all retargeted at the same time.

does the custom characters root bone orientation match the orientation of a standard unreal skeleton?

I’m guessing that the positive y vector is pointed down on the synty character

so that the animation relative to the root isn’t going forward but instead is going up or down
and the reason why left and right are working is because you skeletons root matches the x direction that the standard skeleton uses
