Control over text chat is VERY limited. The only thing you can currently modify is the location of the menu, and whether or not to enable game chat. Creating maps that require players to share an answer via chat are pretty much impossible with the current state of text chat.
I am requesting this as my turn-based social game requires players to share answers through text chat, and there are often problems with players either:
A: Being unsure of how to even open text chat
B: Using text chat to share an answer when it is not their turn
These problems are pretty much limiting my game to private lobbies only, which is frustrating as they could be easily mitigated with increased control over text chat, or some sort of API for keyboard input (that could use the same filters as text chat).
An API for keyboard input would be wonderful, and it could just follow the same restrictions and filtering as the text chat system. It could be a branch of text chat, so players who have the setting disabled potentially due to parental controls would just not be able to use it. Social games are currently growing in popularity in Fortnite, and more control over the key functionality can open the path to much more creative experiences.
However if something like a keyboard API is not possible, more control over text chat would still be great. A text chat device would also provide much more flexibility, with events like “Enable/Disable text chat for instigator” and “Force open/close text chat for instigator”
