Migrating 3D Space Survival Game Logic from Web (Three.js) to Unreal Engine: Best Approach for Resource Management System?

Seeking Advice: Migrating Our 3D Space Survival Game (AstroBase) to Unreal Engine

Hi everyone!

I’m Ratul, and I’m currently leading a team developing AstroBase, a 3D Moon and Mars survival simulation game originally built using a web-based technology stack.

Our current implementation uses Three.js, JavaScript, and a PHP-based backend. As the project grows, we’re exploring a transition to Unreal Engine to take advantage of its advanced rendering capabilities, physics system, world-building tools, and gameplay architecture.

We’re still in the early planning stage of this transition, so we’d really appreciate insights from experienced Unreal Engine developers before making major architectural decisions.

Areas Where We’d Appreciate Your Guidance

1. Gameplay Architecture & Resource Management

AstroBase features a survival system where players must manage multiple essential resources, including oxygen, power, water, food, and radiation shielding.

  • What would be a scalable approach to structuring this type of resource management system in Unreal Engine?

  • Would you recommend using C++, Blueprints, or a hybrid approach?

  • Would systems such as GameInstance Subsystems, Actor Components, or Gameplay Ability System (GAS) be suitable for managing persistent resources and survival mechanics?

  • How would you recommend separating mission logic, resource updates, daily events, and scoring systems?

2. Migrating 3D Environments & Gameplay Logic

We’re moving from a Three.js-based rendering pipeline to Unreal Engine’s rendering, physics, and world-building systems.

  • What are the biggest architectural differences we should account for when making this transition?

  • Are there common pitfalls when rebuilding procedural or terrain-based environments in Unreal Engine?

  • What is the recommended approach for handling astronaut movement, environmental interactions, collision detection, and survival zones?

  • Should we rebuild these systems from scratch using Unreal’s native framework, or are there practical ways to preserve parts of our existing game logic?

3. Recommended Migration Workflow

For a small development team making this transition, what would be a sensible development roadmap?

  • Which Unreal Engine systems or concepts should we learn first?

  • Would you recommend prototyping the core gameplay systems before rebuilding the full 3D environment?

  • Are there any tutorials, documentation, sample projects, or community resources specifically useful for developers transitioning from Three.js to Unreal Engine?

A Little About Our Project

AstroBase is a Moon and Mars survival simulator featuring:

  • :full_moon: A 20-day Moon survival campaign.

  • :red_circle: A 30-day Mars survival campaign.

  • :astronaut: Third-person astronaut exploration.

  • :high_voltage: Multi-resource survival and management mechanics.

  • :tornado: Mission events, player decisions, objectives, and scoring.

  • :robot: NOVA, an AI-powered mission companion.

Our goal is to build a more immersive and scalable 3D space survival experience while preserving the core gameplay systems we’ve already developed.

We understand that there may not be a direct one-to-one equivalent between Three.js and Unreal Engine, so we’re especially interested in hearing about practical approaches, lessons learned, and mistakes worth avoiding.

Any advice, architectural recommendations, learning resources, or migration experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your time and insights!
