Here’s a project I started over a year ago while using the UE4 beta. I yet have to find the time to really finish the cinematic I had planned for it [hopefully someday…], but I still wanted to share with you what I got so far :]
*The close-up of the face shows the new skin shader coming in 4.5, amazing job Epic!
The Cyborg Ninja fights pretty physically, his suit wouldn’t stay pristine for long and the spider drone, since it’s rolling around on hard surfaces to move quickly, it would look really scratchy quite fast as well.
It’s Sci Fi futurist, so let’s imagine it would exist strong solid painting material and special carbone futurist materials that would keep intact , hard to erode and scratch, or some nano machine auto reparation and repainting (why not get them repaired , repainted regulary in some garage also). I just find scratches over made , like the main textures was based on scratches only.
I think it makes perfect sense to have there be scratches and dirt. The cyborg ninja armor is a prototype, and even then it is clearly utilitarian. Function would naturally be a more important factor than form. I think it’s more consistent with the source material and the character, Gray Fox, for it to be imperfect.
Here the character is really over scracthed, even on surfaces that should stay protected , not damaging when rolling on the floor like abdomen, torso etc …
Well , each of us has it’s own preferences, i prefer to play mass effect game with characters having shiny armors with small scratches than having them with full scratched armors even on parts that should never have scratches or small amount.
And please do not add a bunch of scratches and distressing to the assets, they look fine as is - Every game artist and their momma’s momma thinks that by adding a lot of distressing it somehow makes the quality better, it does not.
There is ‘realistic’ and then there is ‘what looks right’ especially when it comes to video game assets.
Amazing job so far The_Distiller! I really like the mask opening and closing on your character. Keep up the great work and I can’t wait to see an update on your project. Have a great day!
