Do you think with the recent announcement with Metal for Mac, that Epic may support Metal with Unreal Engine 4. Therefore Mac uses developing can expect faster performance?
Unreal already support Metal. I think it has build to Unreal 4 since 4.3 version.
The Op means the OS X Desktop OS level Metal support, not just building and using Metal on iOS.
We are already running on it! Just a matter of when it’ll go to an official release
I had assumed as much, but always good to hear an official word. I’m guessing we’ll get it with the Fortnite drop.
Did you see the keynote? It’s not clear if we’ll be able to get it all cleaned up and merged in to main branch in time for 4.9 feature complete deadline.
If you are using GitHub, you’ll start seeing changes to the MetalRHI in some number of weeks most likely.

Yes. Now I’m dying to see it on my .
It was a very pleasant and unexpected surprise in the keynote. I went into the keynote half-expecting Metal OS X, but the Epic angle was completely out of the blue.
Curious, what features of the engine will actually be supported in Metal on OS X? Will any of the compute dependent features be supported?
Aww, I so hope that you guys get this into the 4.9 release. I stopped toying with UE4 because the performance on OSX was horrible on my iMac and I hated booting into bootcamp, especially as Windows 8 doesn’t support a 5k display.
Great! Is 4.9 already metal enabled on mac after updating to or shall we wait to 4.10?
Mac Metal support wasn’t in 4.9 and won’t be in 4.10 due to decisions about what should be in that release. The code for Mac Metal support is in the ‘master’ branch in Github but it takes some small tweaks to enable. We’re still working with Apple on various things too, so it should still be considered experimental at this point.
