Metahuman hair display issues with long focal lengths

Anyone seen this issue where the hair appears to clip/collide with the head mesh on long focal lengths? It happens in the viewport or with cine camera. LOD 0, all strands, freshly downloaded MH.

This also seems to happen with the eyebrows and vellus hair

A few more examples. Almost seems like a clipping plane issue. Mine is set to 0.1.
It must be a setting in my project because I don’t encounter these issues in a fresh project.

(buzz cut hair results in strange moire patterns that shift based on camera distance and focal length)

(happens on eyebrows too)

(really wild results with a super long focal length >300)

UPDATE:

I copied all content to a fresh project and it fixed it. No more issues.

BUT

After a few days of working (and changing various project settings) the issue has returned. I can’t figure out which plug in or setting is contributing to this.

Is there a way to compare two project files or export settings from one to another. I’d really like to isolate this issue.

Hi,
did you find a solution to this?

We encountered the same problem with our character the further he is away. Exactly the same as your pictures show.

This is a serious issue and part of the reason why we had to cancel the hair/fur system for our production.

Hello!

I had a similar issue with Metahuman eyebrows when doing close-ups using long focal lengths like 150mm. It was related to the near clip plane of the camera.

In my shot, blocks of the eyebrow hair would disappear (like they had been shaved off). And it would change if the camera moved.

In the camera Details, I checked Custom Near Clipping Plane, and increased the value from 0.1 to 1.0 (or maybe even higher as long as it didn’t clip anything out of the foreground of the shot).

There is also Near Cilp Plane setting in the Project Settings. Changing it will affect other cameras like the Perspective camera in the Viewport, which might not be desirable in this case. I prefer to change it in the camera settings, not the project settings.

I hope this is helpful!

Hi all there is a known issue with groom and long distances. Even though you set the hair LOD to force at 0 is does not respect it. This should be fixed in 5.5.
