MetaHuman Grooms - Hair Explosions in UE 5.7

I just switched from an RTX 3060 to an AMD 9060 xt and my character’s hair blew up. Worse than before on the 3060 when all I had to do was rebind the hair asset.

This time, the only fix I could find is set the LODSync to Forced LOD = 3 in the assembled metahuman (I use the gasp character as the base class)

It’s better now, the hair stays put instead of exploding (I got sparks and all sorts of junk as well)

But it doesn’t physically react now, I don’t get the hair moving around properly but it’s better than nothing. I’m tempted to swap back to my 3060 but the frame rate was less than happy.

Also, some of my metahumans, when I do set the forced LOD, the head detaches from the body which is very weird.

I’m guessing I should have upgraded to a newer NVIDIA card instead of the AMD. I might return this 9060. Hmm. (I did actually)

One other thing is the hair is also bonkers in the actual metahuman editor/creator app. None of the female hair styles seem to work.

Hey!

I just wanted to chime in that I also experience this issue on an RX 9070 XT GPU.

It seems to have started to occur after a driver update for the GPU, I haven’t isolated the exact update yet, but it works correctly with AMD drivers from September/October last year, and it is broken in the December/January drivers.

I also reported it through the AMD bug reporting tool, but hope a solution will be found on either side soon!

While fixes are still coming if anyone just wanted an easy fix to use in viewport (works for me). I’ve also seen differing youtube vids on fixes etc, which none worked for me.

All I did was go into the groom asset, for example Bear_L_Full → physics tab → Enable Simulation (Untick).

Is fine for the viewport and fine in PIE.

I would love to add something, i dont know if it helps but it doesnt happen on Vulkan, only on Dx11 and Dx12, but issue is that on amd gpus parallel rendering on vulkan is broken, i have a post pending about that

So working in 5.7.4. NVidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti with 16gb Ram. Hair explodes as soon as we assign a Binding Asset in the blueprint. Would really like to use Strand based hair grooms for LOD0 and maybe LOD 1. What’s interesting is this only seems to happen with FAB assets that are not from Epic Games. For example when using the in editor available metahuman hairstyles I dont have this issue. When I dowloaded the free Epic Games groom called UpdoDutchBraid I also did not have this issue. I notice that UpdoDutchBraid groom has a DataflowAsset. My FAB grooms do not. The better ones have a Wardrobe asset and a GroobBinding asset. Could this missing asset be the issue? Any fixes or updates on this? The existing Epic assets are somewhat limiting.
Thanks

Awesome news and update for those following this thread with an AMD GPU! There was a driver update released on May 4, 2026 that seems to have fixed this issue (Version 26.5.1). I have tried several pre-made long hairstyles and have yet to encounter any exploding physics issues (at least within the Metahuman editor itself).

I’d like to tag @JamesPullan and the Epic team involved in looking into this issue so that this update can be potentially verified on their end. If it was indeed the driver, it would definitely still be worth investigating further to ensure this doesn’t happen again in the future if AMD drops the ball again.

This still needs to get fixed for older drivers, for people making cinematics and other stuff it wont matter to them, but for game devs its very important that every player no matter the driver version can play the game normally.
