For VR Developers having this problem and cant disable forward shading, just download the textures and make your rig then switch the LOD to a higher setting the skin comes back. Chances are if you’re developing for VR you want a higher LOD off rip anyway. Otherwise the forward shading option people are bringing up is the correct fix its what bugged mine in the first place.

I had the same issue here, only face was turning gray when I close up
basic issue is that my face skin for lod 0 and 1 is gray,
solution is that, I have changed forced Lod and min Lod to 2 instead of -1 or 0.
better solution is that changing gray skin into actual face but I need real quick solution so here is what I did.
