Mesh Terrain with Sensei Material issues

Hello,

2 problems:

  1. (Screenshot 1) Mesh Terrain Texture Modifier does these ugly folds on the mountain base when I use custom png to extrude mountain formation. I’ve tried to increase the tasselation but it looks still like a stair.
  2. I’ve downloaded Sensei Terrain to apply it on my mesh terrain map. As soon as the material become sready, it looks flat, the contrast between material A and B is very sharp, the tile of the material B (rock) is repeating very badly, it’s supposed to have Nanite rock formations in some area but they don’t spawn as expectec.

Hope someone could help me with at least one of the two problems.

Hello there @lazzaisenough!

These issues are quite distinct, so let’s tackle them separately:

1) The terrain folds

The step-like formations you are seeing are most likely a byproduct of the texture in use. If you are working with a simple 8-bit PNG, that’s a 256 height limit, which will give you quite flat results. To fix that, reimport your PNG, using a 16-bit grayscale. And in the file’s details in UE, make sure that sRGB is disabled, and your compression is set to either grayscale or high-precision. Test with Tessellation again, if needed.

2) Sensei terrain conflict

This is most likely a settings problem, as your scene is already working with Mesh Terrain. From what I could read from the docs, this terrain works with automatic slope-based material layers, so tinkering with the blend/threshold parameters could be the solution. As for the missing rock formations, I would revisit Sensei’s tutorial for the terrain (as well as UE’s own docs on the matter), and make sure the setup for that feature is complete.
