Mesh Normals problem

Hello there,

I am having a problem with my mesh normal. I am working in 3DS Max, exporting as FBX into UE4. When I apply a basic material with the normal input not connected, it looks like this:

Now, when I apply a normal map - even a “blank”, blue normal map (127,127,255) it looks like this:

Any idea what might be causing it?

check if the UV’s are correct in UE4, might be a problem there?

Make sure your normal map is using normal map compression

Both the UV and the compression settings are fine. I wonder if it has to do with how the mesh is exported or how the normals in Max are set up.
