Hi forum,
we scanned a interior space with a Faro330 and took pictures with a Canon5D, registered the 40 scans with Recap and made a quick cleanup in geomagic (unified the clouds to one single cloud and reduced the points to 3mm — from 1.6 billion to 200 million points). Then we imported the cloud to RealityCapture and wanted to add the pictures with the good color info onto the registered cloud. Can we do that and how? Is there also a point reduction option so that we can reduce all the 1.6 billion points in RealityCapture to reasonable amount?
Best John
Hi Jonathan

This way you destroyed valuable data from ORDERED point clouds ( per scanner position ) when you changed it to UNORDERED point clouds that are not supported. Import the original scans into RC and add the images so they can be properly aligned with the scans and then reconstruct it ( you can change the sampling distance for laser data - RECONSTRUCTION->SETTINGS->LASER SCANNER->MINIMAL DISTANCE FOR 2 VERTICES - value is in meters )
Or even better to keep the default value and later use the SIMPLIFY tool to get to the desired triangle count.
Regarding the editing of point clouds, I highly recommend you to do this in Faro Scene and just then to export it. If you have enough images, they can help solve some issues with laser scans…
Hi Wishgranter
Thank you for your answer.

In this case very helpful.

So that means that I cannot import a pointcloud from an object scanned with a gom scanner (mesh>points) that does not have any meta data and combine it with the photos (or photo generated 3d object)? The reason why i am asking is because we have a lot of untextured high poly objects without texture. The automatic way to texture those objects would be great – transfering just the color info as vertex color or texutre. Especially for files that are unordered. So I am guessing RC works with the registrations through a skybox method? In case of not recording color: it does it with the intensity map?
sorry for the many questions
Hi Jonathan
a single image will not work very well… It would be easier to use a 3D painting app to do so…
If you want to solve it properly, capture multiple elevations so that you can alternatively align and reconstruct the subject. So you need to align the images, set a scale and orientation and export the model. Then take the scanned OBJ and register it into the RC model, then just import the OBJ so it fits properly to the image alignment ( proper scale, orientation ) and you can then use texture…
Hi! When I’m importing my scan-data into Reality Capture it divides the data into 4 components. Now I want to align may images in a region i component 1. Is that possible?
After I have pressed Normal Detail for component 1, I’m importing the images that only covers the specific region that I have selected in component 1 and press Align Images. But then it seems like the program builds a new point cloud from the images as a new component and I dont know how to join this two components.

Hello,
have a look at the Merge Components tutorial in the program.
