Memory Leak in 4.8.1? (Mac - Yosemite)

Hello!

I’ve been using UE4 for my dissertation project on my Macbook Pro. I’ve noticed that on the OS X version of the editor and launcher, there is some kind of memory leak- or similar- going on. If I leave UE4 or the launcher running for an extended period of time, my SSD space disappears piece by piece, but re-appears when I do a restart. I’m assuming that this is a case of swap files being created and then left to hog space. It’s mildly annoying and keeps eating space, though keeping an eye on it and restarting is fast enough that it doesn’t slow me down too much. Can I help track down this issue at all?

My system is a 2014 15" rMBP:
•512 GB SSD
•16 GB DDR3
•2.5 Ghz Core i7
•GeForce GT 750M + Intel Iris Pro 5200
•OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite

Hi ,

I’ve been unable to reproduce your issue. Can you provide a little more information so that we can better test this?

  1. Are you using a binary version of the engine (from our launcher) or a version built from source code?
  2. How are you monitoring your SSD so that you can see it disappearing “piece by piece”
  3. Can you open one of our template projects and see if the same thing occurs?

I’m using the binary version from the launcher, yes. So far I’ve only been monitoring it in a simple way- checking the amount of available space on the Macintosh HD volume at regular intervals while the editor and/or launcher is open and nothing else is happening. I’ll grab one of the templates and see if it happens there.

Hi ,

Are you still experiencing this issue. Last you wrote you were going to check with one of the templates and see if the memory leak occurred there? Let me know if it does.

Thanks

Hello!

I’ve been doing some comparisons. It’s got nothing to do with a memory leak, as far as I can tell. Completely different issue instead- the UnrealEngine folder in Application Support was ballooning in size. It had expanded to 60 GB, and had existed through iterations of 4.6, 4.7, 4.8 and 4.8.1, and at the time that I started noticing this issue, only 4.8.1 was listed as being installed by the Epic Launcher. I completely trashed the folder and downloaded 4.8.2, which has left the folder at a vastly more reasonable size.

Hi ,

It should take up only around 8GB of HD space per downloaded version of the Engine. Can you confirm that your issue was related to just the stored previous versions and support data, or do you feel there is still more to this that needs to be resolved?

Also, you mention that the Application Support folder is a “vastly more reasonable size…” What is the current size exactly?

I’m confident that it was just related to something with the stored previous versions, and that whatever the case was, it’s no longer a problem. The current size of the folder- which only contains 4.8.2 as downloaded through the launcher- is 4.17 GB.
