Inspired by the iconic opening cave scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, I created a short MetaHuman movie using the Quixel Dark Ruins Megascans asset. I wanted to make such a great scene in Unreal, and when I was checking Dark Ruins asset I thought it was perfect environment!
I also wanted to learn how MegaLights works. I rendered all sequences both with and without MegaLights, and added side-by-side comparison of some scenes at the end of the movie. I disabled MegaLights in each Post Process Volume and turned it on and off in the project setting.
Since it is an experimental feature at this time, this might change but MegaLights tended to reduce the effect of direct lighting. It was okay, but it was a bit problematic that it didn’t seem to work for hair light (separation light) for MetaHuman. When I set a light behind MetaHuman’s head, it didn’t reflect at all no matter where I set the light and no matter how I increased the light intensity. I hope this will be improved in future releases.
But in most cases there was almost no visual difference between MegaLights on and off, since performance boost must be the primary purpose of MegaLights.
