Materials Randomly Get Wiped Out

Hey, I’ve been working on a huge town exported as an FBX out of Revit LT for about 6 months. I’ve been able to simply hit reload whenever I’ve made changes to the base model. For some reason, this time when I reload the FBX all the materials come in as blank default ones named “proxy_model…” I have over 50 materials, so it’s a pain to reassign them…any ideas?

Some other annoying things that also happen on the reload:
-half of my materials are randomly purged out of my library
-any material with () in the name are renamed with _

I hate this kind of unexpected stuff - what the heck?

Hey there @Jeeferoo! Does the texture import issue happen when you import them fresh into a new project as well? The naming convention changes are likely due to allowed characters for cross platform file system requirements.

Hey, thanks for the swift response.

looks like the naming change happened sometime earlier and I only noticed now.

The materials default on a new file too, but I think that’s a limitation of Revit LT FBX Export function - Autodesk stripped materials out of it.

I’ve resolved the issue by:
-Getting an old backup version and loading my new FBX into it - everything came in fine without any losses.
-In my newest TM file, deleting everything except for my latest changes, saving
-Opening up the backup and merging in the purged new file

Lesson learned - always keep backups

Actually, it happens randomly again when I make significant edits to my FBX. What’s really weird is it deletes about half of my existing materials within the TM file when I reload the FBX.

I don’t understand what’s going on. It will take me about an hour to remap all the materials, but I don’t want to be having to do that every time I make a change to the base Revit model…

Ahhh sorry to hear the issue came back! If you save the material separately once it’s imported, does it apply to the new versions correctly? (This wouldn’t retain your new changes to materials, but could offer a way to speed up application if the import doesn’t reimport correctly.)

Sorry, I don’t understand what you’re suggesting to do. I think I need a video tutorial

But I did notice that now the material reset seems to only be occurring after I merge two projects and then sync the import. I’ve tested it a few times and that is the consistent factor. But, scrolling up, a few weeks ago, merging the files is what saved me before. I guess I’m no closer to figuring it out . I’m running 2024.2 now and was 2024.1 before, maybe that’s the difference?

I always have this problem in sketchup.
Sometimes I can solve it by exploding and creating new groups/materials within sketchup and importing again. But sometimes that’s not enough either. Another thing he decided was to create the material and add it to the Library User. But it’s pretty frustrating most of the time that it doesn’t work. I hope they solve this in the 2025 version
