Material imports properly but turns gray

Unreal cannot do hair very well. At all. Material turns gray after a few seconds. No fix I have come across keeps it from happening. Any suggestions on how to get Unreal to maintain a material for hair without turning back to the gray mesh a few seconds after simulating? For that matter, why would it show accurately at all for a few seconds and turn gray? Materials should either work or not work. Be broken or not broken. This fading out to the gray mesh is a bug or something.
