I am following a tutorial and they skipped passed the material function they made. What are the orange, green, and purple nodes that are named a, b, c, e and x?

They are named reroute nodes.
So for the ones that are connected on the left, you would drag from the previous node and right click and select “Add named Reroute Node”. Now if you just right click on the screen, the top of the dialog will have a list of name reroute nodes and you can drop those where they are connected on the right in your screenshot.
