Massive bug in Epic Games Launcher VRAM Usage

We had several updates and the problem continues.

I can confirm @SGGhostRiders’s findings.

Changing account to one with many owned products has high (2.3GB for me) VRAM usage, changing account to a new one with few owned products has low (~0.1GB) VRAM usage. This was tested on a clean up-to-date system (meaning likely no external factors affecting result).

I own a fair amount of games and a fair amount of unreal engine assets, so I do not know which is impacting the memory leak.

On a laptop with Intel integrated graphics (tested both old Intel HD graphics, and Intel Iris Xe Graphics) the VRAM was always low, no matter the account. Meaning that it probably does not happen to “shared video memory” only on dedicated video memory.

On a laptop with 2 GPUs (Nvidia Optimus), the VRAM was always low (~0.1GB) with the intel integrated GPU, and with the discreate Nvidia GPU it had high VRAM usage with my account, roughly the same amount (2.3GB) was used across different setup with my account.

Same here.

Sorry for insisting on this, but how am I supposed to play something from the Epic Store or use the engine if half of VRAM is taken by the launcher?

This needs to be fixed ASAP.

Is there a proper way to submit a bug or open an issue or contact someone? this crap keeps growing with each product i acquire… it’s already surpassed 5.5Gb!!! AND IT’S HOGGING MY ENTIRE PC!!!

I started using “Heroic launcher” just out of spite, but still have to reopen EGL every time i need to add or download UE5 assets, and it takes SEVERAL MINUTES to completely LOAD! and another few TO FULLY CLOSE!!

It’s so infuriating to hear Epic Games complaining every time about “not having enough user base” but then can’t figure out how to even make a proper launcher for over HALF A DECADE!

The launcher has had 50 updates and the problem persists. It seems no one cares that launcher consumes all the RAM for each asset…

I just opened the launcher to check something today and realized it’s not sucking my VRAM dry on startup and got excited, it seems they applied a “workaround”(probably server side as last update did not fix it either and i have not updated since then).

The workaround confirms that specifically UE assets were the problem, as the work around consists of them not loading the “assets library” on launch, but ONLY if you go to the “Unreal Engine” tab, which will result in once again the old problem until you close and reopen the launcher, so for now just DON’T go to the “Unreal Engine” tab if you don’t have to until they fix the problem for real.

BTW, the launcher is blazing fast now compared to before, it takes literally 1-5 seconds to fully load and allow me to launch a game, and the delay depends of how much it takes to load the “Store” page and it’s videos and other resources more than anything.

Not for me, Im using windows 10

@Jinkel I’m on windows 10 as well, but pretty sure OS doesn’t influence anything.

Try to completely close the launcher(restart pc if needed) and when opening the launcher MAKE SURE you DON’T enter the “Unreal Engine” tab AT ANY point, if you even click it for a second and before it loads you switch back to “Store” or “Library” it will still trigger the “UE Assets loading”, make sure that on launch it loads “Store” or “Library” tab by default.

Finally, I can play games with Epic Games launcher!

Clicking on the Unreal Engine tab will load all assets and make VRAM high again (like it was before the update)

And yes, I have confirmed it two be working like this on two computers, meaning it’s not just randomly fixed itself on my computer. VRAM was reduced after updating the launcher.

Actually, there have been at-least two updates since last week / when it was fixed.
I think you didn’t realize it, due to automatic background update. Check Windows Services (services.msc) if you have a service called “Epic Games Updater”.

@99stem Maybe it was updated without me realizing it, i’m used to have to click “update and restart” button that appears in “Settings” when needed, but i suppose that might not be the case every time…

I don’t know if it’s a recent update that fkd it up again or it was like this from before and it just happened that i did not had UE5 installed before(i uninstalled it few week ago to free up space and make backup of the SSD), but yesterday i installed the new 5.6 to check it out and now my launcher ALWAYS consumes the VRAM on startup, even when not going to the “Unreal Engine” tab at all.

Uninstalling all Unreal Engine versions fixes the problem and it returns to how it worked before, only using the VRAM after accessing the “Unreal Engine” tab after launch.

Workaround to keep UE5 and avoiding the VRAM hoarding BUG:

  • Install UE5
  • Close the launcher
  • Rename UE5 folder(or move it)
  • Launch EGL
  • Go to “Unreal Engine” tab and remove the engine by clicking the “x”
  • Move to another tab like “Library” or “Store”(EGL remembers your last tab sometimes, this is to prevent entering the UE one by default)
  • Close launcher and reopen it
  • Problem should be gone

To open UE5 without the EGL, just create a new shortcut(or redirect the existing one) to “*\Engine\Binaries\Win64\UnrealEditor.exe” from the new directory and use that to execute it.

I only use “Asset Manager Studio” from Nathanael Anderson.

Great, thanks, i did not knew about this one, it’s funny how 2 pieces of free softwares does better job (AMS and Heroic Launcher) at facilitating the EGL’s services while the official launcher barely does what is supposed to do with added overhead :stuck_out_tongue:
