It would take a bit of time for me to learn a bit more about ue4’s way of doing things, but if there’s a demand for this type of thing here I would seriously consider it. It’s such early days that it’s hard to get a grasp on exactly what types of assets / plugins would be in demand in UE4.
What do you guys think?

I have had the pleasure of working with this water system. It is !
I would love it if it came to Unreal
Tl:DR -10/10 would buy again
@ EPIC -
As for the market place - I am not sure if this has been mentioned. BUT limiting the marketplace to people with a subscription (Correct me if I am wrong on this) would limit the amount of profit you would be able to get.
Hmm right, A quality content and search and sorting tools for finding the best piece of text available the specific category and content should be add time to time for updation in the market place.
anty piracy systems never works, that only annoy people who purchase that legally.
i forget how many times in the past i download cracks of a product i buy for play with noCD (example) and that things.
keep easy, example you can download UE4 and not pay for it, but if you not annoying buyers and have a good price, piracy its a minor problem, the only people who download illegally if that nerver going to buy.
You can give support who purchase, that encourage buying it, for that perhaps would be good a option in market for ask/response support questions
“buy its with 2 support answers” or something like that, and buy extra support.
I notice that opening the Marketplace to 3rd party items is not mentioned anywhere in the roadmap. Should we take that to mean that it is going to be so far in the distant future that it is not even scheduled yet?
The Asset Store is one of your competitors’ main advantages so I would have thought getting the Unreal Marketplace open would be a matter of high priority.
It might not be on the roadmap because it’s not directly related to the engine itself, perhaps because they want to keep the goods secret until they think its ready?
They have said in the past that the marketplace is one of their top priorities.
Making a fully fledged shop like this is not a peace of cake. The database is complex, the interfaces need to feel just right both on the frontend and backend, the payment system need to be secure and all legal stuff including the terms of use etc need to be written from scratch for all countries and on top of that the entire service need to work for thousands of concurrent users.
Either ways, this thing is a money machine and every month they don’t have it could be considered actual profit loss so don’t worry for them, I’m pretty sure they know what they have to do
I’ve been thinking about special category for high resolution meshes. Maybe not for games, but for architectural visualizations and movies.
Unreal rendering has potential for making 3d movies and visualizations. I’m thinking myself about doing some myself. (Don’t know yet how to capture the video, thought. Camtasia is way to slow…).
Of course should be strictly forbidden to put meshes straight from ZB or Mudbox, but I think 60k-100k polygons per object should be fine.
Having some vehicles, furnitures or any interior props ready would be a great help.
Also, this could be a great opportunity to widen the products range, and so the profit.
perhaps a non intrusive, not annoying, basic piracy system can be for each buy in Marketplace can generate to the buyer and seller a share unique id,
the seller if see his work in any commercial proyect can ask for the purchase id and take legal actions on his own, that only can work for something evident and can be avoiding if he modify. But that happend with any piracy system, at least that not annoying, like sell sh*t with annoying piracy systems.
Anyway if Epic going to facility sell third-party sh*t “close source” or with annoying piracy system hope they add filters and labels for identified.
I’m not really worried about the piracy. Look at it from the other side, the people who will download your product via torrent, wouldn’t buy it anyway.
At least you gain popularity, and the way to get more real clients is to make often updates.
So, it is better to make packs of models and update them with new ones from time to time, and make good promotions to gain more interest.
Actually the “unique id” isn’t a bad idea to catch people who didn’t buy it.
@erWilly
Who cares man? This is all about money. World is running on money. And it is still helpful for many game developers no matter what you sell (if it is just a stupid can model or dunno bullet?). Did you even try to make a game once? Try to model a whole level, full of props and bunch of animated characters by yourself. I’m sure you will change the mind. Also do not confront Unity with Unreal! There will be tons of amazing stuff for UE I’m telling ya’, given the possibilities inside the engine itself. Unity is pretty much empty; no working controller, no material editor, no atmospherics, outdated mono develop, crappy and buggy camera effects, outdated and incomplete documentation, no examples for actual game projects, community full of weeaboos and total lack of developer response for bug reports, … I can go on and on… (I will get shot if I continue… so better to stop here).
100% agreed. I think I may have ended up posting in another thread, but I see lots of benefits to having source for plugins, besides the obvious:
Neatly avoid the problem most plugin marketplaces have, which is a bevy of out of date/unsupported plugins that haven’t been updated in a long time.
Prevent teams being held up by plugin authors, or from having to provide support for every use-case.
As far as piracy goes, I don’t think it matters, and there’s little danger of someone seriously just copying the code, since that tends to be highly obvious (i.e., everyone will instantly realize that “Bob’s Ocean Plugin” is just a rip of VaOcean, if they look the same/have the same code and such).
anyway who want piracy something he going to piracy. people who never going buy it if he must pay. people who do not want to do anything more play with a engine.
who want do a serious bussiness proyect and a commercial product in any way not going to piracy. That its too stupid. And that must be the target for anyone who want sell.
I have idea about payments. There should be donation option. I want to put some free content on market place, and give people option to donate money for me if they like it.
There should be minimal donation value (like 1$), to protect from spamming. Some banks, treat lots of small transactions ( < 1$), as possible infringements. In that case I’d rather just have you, using my content for free, than dealing with my bank for few weeks (;.
I would +1 this idea. Given that the marketplace is STILL not available for outside content I wish someone would start a 3rd party marketplace of content in the meantime. Half tempted to do it myself
